Making Youself Look Like a Religious Idiot

March 31, 2009 Leave a comment

cloudssnow112108Look at the picture to the left. This is the way a Christian, Catholic, etc (or most Christ-based faiths) would God to be perceived: Beautiful, understanding, and full of grace. Well, Click Here for an article by Mike Seate of The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. After you do that, read the rest of this post. Finished …. ok, let’s talk.

I’m a typical guy with a family that goes to an Anglican (Christian) church – no different than any other person in this city. I’m not perfect, I make mistakes, I try to get better at things, and end up repeating that cycle over and over. I do believe in defending your faith …. for a Christian that is known as apologetics (click for a definition). Please keep in mind this is from Wikipedia.

Don’t run yet .. this isn’t turning into a religious rant, but just highlighting my pet peeve and the above links were that you understood a little bit about where I come from.

My pet peeve …. idiots that shove things down your throat, or act like complete jerks. Why? Because that is the best way to get someone to hate what you believe in. I don’t care if that is Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism, hobbies, lifestyle, etc – if you act like a complete *** (I can’t print that word, but you figure it out) people tend to associate what your are perceived as (a Christian, etc) with being a jerk. You don’t help people come into the light of your beliefs by shaming them or embarrassing them, and they don’t want to become part of anything that is perceived as being “just a group of jerks”.

Acting in the ways described in the article by Mike Seate shows someone that open passes judgment on others when this is not his job … it’s God’s.

Go figure … people that think they can take over God’s job. Watch out for the great big lightning bolts around those types.

If you truly believe in something – at least attempt to act the way that belief indicates you should. People know that you are not perfect and don’t expect you to act that way – but if you act like a jerk, they will treat you like the true hypocrite that you are.

PS – “Hate the sin, not the sinner” is a good motto to live by, even if you are not religious – ie. “Hate the action, not the person doing it” as everyone is in a constant state of learning and improving and nobody is perfect. In other words – your are not better than the guy standing next to you. If you think you are – get over it quick, unless you want to live a very disappointing life.

Conficker Virus – Gotcha!! – April Fools!!!

March 31, 2009 Leave a comment

fyiiconFor those who haven’t heard, it’s virus time again. The main one you have all heard about is the Conficker Worm. There are of course other minor ones, but this is the “biggie” that’s making all the news. Some security experts are playing it down, and some are playing it up. I guess it depends on who needs more exposure in the media at this point in their life. From SWB’s point of view … the best thing is prevention. Shut off your peer to peer, limit downloading, etc, etc – and the most important … use common sense (if you don’t have any, find some).

Click Here for a current article from USA Today on the worm and Click Here for the security news site. Sans is the best site for information on any IT security threats.

*Update: Here is the WPXI article on the subject

PS – As an IT manger, if your security team tells you to not do things at work over the next few days … listen. If not, you could lose your job over wanting to play the online version of Asteroids because you let in a virus. Stupid, huh?

It’s A Nutty World Out There

March 31, 2009 Leave a comment

cluelessandconfused1As the FDA is always clueless and confused (sometimes with the government helping it along) … it allowed more nuts out there again.  SWB is wondering who paid them off this time to allow things to pass through … or what funds the government passed making them cut needed inspectors.  Well the latest “oops” was reported by Kraft foods when it detected salmonella in pistachios.   Again, they came from in or near California which has had some issues in the past few years with contaminated food (and mixed of imported contaminated food).

Well, SWB hopes you hated pistachios … because you can’t eat ’em anymore.

… and the full “clueless and confused” award goes to the FDA and our government for missing another issue.

Anyways …. Click Here for a good article on the current status of pistachios by The Associated Press ad appearing on the KDKA website.

PS – If terrorists are as smart as they appear they are becoming … they will just sit, sip wine, and wait for us to poison ourselves as we trust the FDA to actually inspect food.  And people wonder why gardening and home hydroponics re thriving.  Go figure, right?  Maybe Granny wasn’t so stupid growing and bottling her own stuff.

Carmen L Robinson for Mayor

carmendemCapture from Carmen L Robinson’s campaign site – click on it to go there. We have another Candidate on the Democratic side for Mayor of Pittsburgh. That candidate is Carmen L Robinson. Just as we did with the other Candidates that we have found so far, we e-mailed Carmen a request for an e-mail interview. The first six questions are the same first six Dok Harris answered, and the last three are optional as they are more on the fun side.

We will be awaiting Carmen’s reply …. and make sure you check out her site linked above so you get to know her better. Click Here for a quick link on what she stands for.

You also can follow her on Twitter.

PS – you gotta check out her new slogan on Twitter. It’s just so worth it.

Public Art Competition by Aaron Stauber

March 30, 2009 Leave a comment

fyiiconFYI – Aaron Stauber of Rugby Realty wants to start an art competition at one of their buildings in Downtown Pittsburgh. Basically he wants to try to spark a friendly competition between downtown properties for the purpose of beautifying the city and the buildings. So far you are looking at a nicely put together jury for the competition – so it looks like he’s not playing any games. The winning designer will get $75,000 and the piece will be created at The Pittsburgh Glass Center.

Rugby Realty is based out of New York, and to see them really support the arts here shows that level of connection between our cities.

Click Here for the reference article by Chris Togneri in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and join in. Let’s see if we can turn the whole city into one big glass and public art exhibition! PGC could use the boost now too!!

New Kid’s Game – Kick Skull

noballsallowedSometimes things just make you go …. huh??

Like this article from The Associated Press as it appears in The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

After being at their home for about a year, a family decided that their children should be different – they eliminated the normalcy of playing with a ball and replaced it with playing with a skull. Just ignore the kid’s screams, it takes time to build up those callouses on their toes for “Kick-Skull”.

PS – You gotta love it when kids create new toys on their own from things in the yard. 🙂

Yes – I did list this under “cool stuff” simply because I’m a little on the strange side.
